Critical Limb Ischemia and Limb Salvage Procedures
Critical limb ischemia (CLI) is a severe blockage in the arteries of the legs, causing reduced blood flow, pain, and potentially leading to limb amputation. Limb salvage procedures aim to restore blood flow and prevent amputation.
How it works:
- Angioplasty: A balloon is used to open up the blocked artery, and a stent may be placed to keep it open.
- Bypass surgery: In severe cases, a graft is used to bypass the blocked artery, restoring blood flow to the limb.
When it’s needed:
- In patients with severe peripheral artery disease (PAD) leading to critical limb ischemia.
- To prevent amputation and improve limb function.
Benefits:
- Reduces pain and improves blood flow to the affected limb.
- Prevents the need for amputation in most cases.
