Critical Limb Ischemia and Limb Salvage Procedures

Critical limb ischemia (CLI) is a severe blockage in the arteries of the legs, causing reduced blood flow, pain, and potentially leading to limb amputation. Limb salvage procedures aim to restore blood flow and prevent amputation.
How it works:
  • Angioplasty: A balloon is used to open up the blocked artery, and a stent may be placed to keep it open.
  • Bypass surgery: In severe cases, a graft is used to bypass the blocked artery, restoring blood flow to the limb.
When it’s needed:
  • In patients with severe peripheral artery disease (PAD) leading to critical limb ischemia.
  • To prevent amputation and improve limb function.
Benefits:
  • Reduces pain and improves blood flow to the affected limb.
  • Prevents the need for amputation in most cases.

Percutaneous Mitral and Tricuspid Valve Repair/Replacement

This is a minimally invasive heart procedure aimed at treating the mitral or tricuspid valves, which control blood flow between the heart chambers. Problems like valve leakage (regurgitation) or narrowing (stenosis) can disrupt blood flow and strain the heart.

How it works:
  • A catheter (thin tube) is inserted through a vein in the leg and guided to the heart.
  • For mitral and tricuspid valves, different devices can either repair the valve or replace it entirely.
  • This avoids the need for open-heart surgery, reducing recovery time and risks.
When it’s needed:
  • In patients with severe valve regurgitation (backflow of blood) or stenosis (narrowing).
  • For those who are not candidates for traditional open-heart surgery.
