Pulmonary Embolism Intervention
Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a life-threatening condition where a blood clot blocks blood flow to the lungs. Interventions aim to remove or dissolve the clot, restoring blood flow.
How it works:
- Catheter-directed thrombolysis: A catheter is inserted into the blood vessel and delivers clot-busting medication directly to the site of the clot.
- Clot retrieval: A device is used to physically remove the clot from the blood vessel.
When it’s needed:
- In patients with a large or life-threatening pulmonary embolism.
- In cases where medications alone are not effective.
Benefits:
- Restores normal blood flow to the lungs quickly.
- Reduces the risk of long-term complications like chronic lung disease.
